Advising

Assistance in career and educational planning is available to all members of the community. Our new counsellor and advisor, Jules Smith, will be on campus at set times throughout each term. Counselling

Confidential, free counselling services are available to our students at the Sunshine Coast Campus. Consultation is also provided to faculty and staff regarding dealing with student issues. Counselling services are provided by highly trained and caring counsellors, knowledgeable about student concerns and ways to be of help.  Appointments are typically 50 minutes long.

We encourage you to set up an appointment with our counsellor, Jules Smith.  She will be available starting January 10th, 2011 from 9:30 - 3:00pm.  You can book an appointment through our receptionist at the front desk, by calling 604-885-9310, in person, or visit Counselling for more details.

First Nations Liaison Officer

As the former Adult Education Coordinator of the Sechelt Indian Band, Sue Perry provides support for Aboriginal learners by ensuring they have access to the educational, financial and community support they need.  This new position is filling a recognized gap in services that allows for a more proactive and preventative approach to supporting Aboriginal learners.  To contact Sue call the Sunshine Coast Campus at (604) 885-9310 or Sechelt Nation at (604) 885-9404.

Financial Aid

Financial assistance is available through grants, loans, bursaries and scholarships. A Financial Aid officer visits throughout the academic year.  For more Information or to set up an appointment, please call reception at (604) 885-9310.

Sunshine Coast Campus Award of Excellence

Thanks to the generosity of the Sunshine Coast Community a scholarship is now available specifically for students attending the Sunshine Coast campus. You may qualify for the scholarship if you are a resident of the region taking credit courses at the Sunshine Coast campus. Contact the Sunshine Coast campus at 604.885.9310 or the Financial Aid Office in North Vancouver at (604) 984-4966 for details.

Travis Cripps Memorial Bursary

This award is to help current Capilano University students who have benefited from the Adult Basic Education program to further their education, either on a full or part-time basis. Preference is given to residents of the Sunshine Coast.

General Education Development (GED) Testing

GED tests will be held twice per year at the Sunshine Coast campus.  To apply for the test, applications must be received by the Ministry of Education four weeks prior to the examination date.

Students planning to continue their studies should check that the GED meets the entrance requirements for the program they are entering.

Upcoming GED tests are scheduled for the following dates:

April 29 and 30th, 2011 and
November 18 and 19th, 2011

English Diagnostic Test

Applicants planning to enrol in any Arts and sciences English course at Capilano University must take Capilano University's English Diagnostic Test (EDT).

Students will be exempted from the EDT if they have achieved any of the following:

  • A in English 12 or English Literature 12
  • A in English 12 First Peoples
  • A in BENG 052
  • 4 or higher in an Advanced Placement course in English Composition or English Literature
  • 5 or higher in the International Baccalaureate course in English A1
  • C- or higher in an English transfer course form another college or university
  • C or higher in FAL X99 from SFU
  • a degree from an English-speaking university

Library

The Sunshine Coast campus library has a small collection of books and reference materials. All students registered in either credit or non-credit courses have free access to both the Sunshine Coast and North Vancouver libraries for the term in which they are registered.

Community borrowers:  to receive a library card, two pieces of valid identification are required (one piece a photo ID and one with a currernt address).  Fees are $25/year plus $2 for the card (this also serves as a copy card).  Cards a valid for 1 year.

The library is open Monday to Friday from  9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.
