Information for Instructors
At the beginning of each term, we encourage instructors to remind students that the Writing Centre is open to assist all students at the university with any written assignments.
Located in Fir 402, the Writing Centre operates on a drop-in basis. Encourage your students to visit us before their major assignments are due in order to see how we operate and the resources we offer.
What we do:
- We advise students on their work in progress. We help them shape and develop THEIR ideas.
- We tutor students on particular aspects of writing (e.g. outlining, verb tenses, thesis statements, paragraphing, documentation).
- We help students overcome specific writing problems by going over graded assignments or English Diagnostic Tests.
- We don't proofread, edit, or "clean up" an assignment before it is handed in. We may point out sample errors in a piece of writing in order to teach a particular concept or pattern of error. We help students improve or develop effective editing techniques.
- We don't comment on the grade an assignment received or may receive.
- We don't second-guess or interpret instructions for the assignments. If a student is in doubt, we send them back to their instructor.
- Tours: Writing Centre faculty are available throughout the term to offer a tour of the Centre to your classes. Please email writingcentre@capilanou.ca to arrange a tour.
- Brochures and posters: if you would like a class set of Writing Centre brochures or a poster, please email your request to writingcentre@capilanou.ca.
Please feel free to drop in yourself - look around, ask questions.
We are always open to suggestions from faculty for new handouts or books that might benefit students.
