Help for Off-Campus Access to Databases

General information about databases access

  • Access to Databases & Articles is restricted to Capilano University students and faculty.
  • You must have a Student ID number or Faculty Banner ID.
  • Once you click on Connect to database, you will be prompted to enter your name and Student ID number or Faculty Banner ID. If you are asked for a "password" rather than an ID number, then there is something wrong and you should consult Troubleshooting.
  • Some of the articles in our databases are available in Adobe Acrobat PDF format. This requires that you have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your computer in order to view and print articles. Download Adobe Acrobat Reader if necessary.

Troubleshooting

If you have tried everything suggested below and you still cannot connect, call a Reference Librarian at (604) 984-1769 during the Library's open hours. Leave a message - as long as the Library is open, we will call you back.

1.   All browsers must have cookies enabled.   Usually this is the default setting but this might have been changed in your browser. Check your browser's "help" to find out how to enable cookies.

2.   Nonstandard Internet Service Provider (i.e. not Telus or Shaw).  Services sometimes have unique settings that interfere with proxy logins. Contact your Internet Service Provider and tell them that you are having problems with proxy access to another site. This might be caused by their default proxy settings, firewall or other local settings.

3.  The AOL Browser cannot be used to access the Databases. Instead:

  • Connect as usual
  • If you do not have another browser, download the Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox browser.
  • Minimize the AOL browser
  • Open the browser that you have just downloaded and use it to access the Library's Databases

 4. Pop-up Blocker:  If you are using a pop-up blocker, make sure that it is set up to accept the Library's URL.

5. Problems with the Ebsco databases:   Sometimes there are display problems when using the Ebsco databases with the Internet Explorer or Vista browsers.  Use the Mozilla Firefox browser instead.
