Non-Student Borrowers

Please note: Information on this page is relevant to all categories of borrower with some exceptions. For Capilano University employees, refer to the Instructors' Info page. Community Borrowers, Continuing Education Students, Eldercollege Students and Post-Secondary Reciprocal Borrowers should refer to Borrowing Guidelines for Non-Students.

Student Library Cards

Your current Capilano University student ID card entitles you to library borrowing privileges. Cards must be presented by the legitimate cardholder to borrow material. It is the responsibility of each borrower to notify the Library of a lost card or change of address immediately.  

Loan Periods 

2 weeks Books in the general collection
1 week Videos, DVDs, CDs, slides, spoken word audio-cassettes and books in high demand subject areas (e.g. music therapy)
3 days LP records, graphic art periodicals including Applied Arts, Communication Arts, Graphis, How, Print and Step Inside Design (formerly Step-by-Step Graphics) and books in high demand subject areas
Various Reserve items (ranging from 3 hours to 7 days) and AV equipment (by arrangement only)
Library use only Reference books, government annual reports, government documents, periodicals, newspapers, maps, pamphlets and some art books from the general collection

Loan Restrictions 

A maximum of 30 items may be checked out at one time. Course reserves, graphic art periodicals, books in high demand subject areas and audio-visual items are limited to 5 items each.

Holds & Renewals

Videos, DVDs, CDs, periodicals, and reserve material may not be placed on hold or renewed.  You may renew books twice or place up to 10 holds yourself using the online catalogue, or in person at the Check Out counter. (No renewal or hold requests by telephone please!) The Library will hold material for 4 days for pick-up.

Overdue Fines

$0.25/day 1 and 2 week book loans
$0.50/day graphic art periodicals, recalled items
$1.00/day reserve material (except 3 hour items), reference loans, CDs, LPs, videos, DVDs 
$0.50/hour 3 hour reserve loans

Note that failure to return overdue materials and pay all fines may result in suspension of library privileges, withholding of official transcripts, and denial of further registration.

Replacement Costs

Borrowers will be charged the full retail replacement cost for lost or heavily damaged items (full replacement cost also applies when part of a set is lost). Where retail costs cannot be determined, these minimum charges apply:

$ 5.00 Single slide
$10.00 Single issue periodicals, reserve articles
$25.00 CDs, LPs, videos
$35.00 Books, bound periodicals

Added to the replacement cost is a $10.00 processing fee for lost or heavily damaged items. For damaged items which are repairable, flat fees of $1.00 per damaged page (to a maximum of 10) and $10.00 for book cover repairs apply.
