Wireless Internet

Last updated: September 2011

Capilano offers free wireless internet access to all active students and employees, throughout most areas on campus.

To gain access to the wireless network you will have to authenticate:
Students: Use your Capilano User ID and password.
Employees: Use your network login ID and password.

How to Connect

The first step is to look for a wireless signal with your laptop.  You should automatically see the unsecured network called "CapU-Wireless". Once you connect you will be asked to accept the User Agreement, and then you'll need to enter your userID and password.  Follow the instructions and that's it - you're online!  But note that this is an unsecured network (no data encryption is used).  If you wish to set up an encrypted connection (recommended), follow the instructions below.

Important: Smartphones and PDAs are not officially supported. You are welcome to connect using the following information but IT Services is unable to help if you can't get it going.

Setting Up an Encrypted Connection

For advanced users, just choose your encryption method and use the following information:

WPA Personal WPA2 WEP

Network Name (SSID): capwpapsk
Network Authentication: WPA-PSK
Data Encryption: TKIP
Password/Key: tonkatruck

Network Name (SSID): capwpa2psk
Network Authentication: WPA2-PSK
Data Encryption: AES
Password/Key: hotwheelsgremlin

Network Name (SSID): capwep
Network Authentication: Open
Data Encryption: WEP
Password/Key: 20060313B20040710B20050816

If you're not sure where to start, just follow these instructions - select which operating system you have along with your preferred encryption method (we recommend trying WPA first):

Troubleshooting and Help

  • Once you've completed the wireless configuration, please wait 60 seconds for your computer to refresh its connection to the network.
  • If you've set up an encrypted connection but your computer always connects to the 'CapU-Wireless' network, you will need to edit that network/profile and set it to 'manual connect only'.
  • File-sharing programs, malware and viruses may cause your connection to fail.
  • You may need to edit your wireless device settings and disable TCPIPv6.
  • Important: You will be asked to re-authenticate using your userID and password every 30 days.

If you've done all this and you're still unable to connect, please visit IT Services' Computer Learning Centre (CLC) in the Library.  Our technician will be happy to help you. We will do our best to help with connection problems, however this is a self-serve resource and you are responsible for knowing how to configure your laptop's wireless settings.

Coverage Map

This map provides a general overview of which areas are covered by our wireless network, effective July, 2009.  The unique geography of our campus, as well as our concrete buildings, will hinder access in some places.

The bright areas denote current coverage:
