QUICKLINK: Wireless Printing (WebPrint) (available on- and off-campus, but note that print jobs are automatically deleted from the queue after 30 minutes)

PaperCut: your print & copy account

PaperCut is the name of the system used at Capilano to track and charge for student printing on campus. When you print to a lab printer or use the colour copier in the Library, the appropriate cost-per-print is automatically deducted from your account. You will need to purchase credits in order to print or copy on campus. See “How do I add credits to my PaperCut account?” (below) for details.

How much does it cost?

  • Letter or Legal* size black & white -- 10¢ per print/copy, single-sided; 9¢ for double-sided*
  • Letter or Legal* size colour -- 50¢ per print/copy, single-sided; 45¢ for double-sided*

*Duplex and legal-size printing are currently available only in the Computer Learning Centre (CLC) at the Library, although we are continuing to update our systems.
*The workstations in the Library proper also double-side.

Capilano encourages environmentally responsible printing by setting the default to duplex, or double-sided, printing wherever possible. A discount of 10% is given for double sided printing.

How do I view my PaperCut account?

When signed into a lab computer on campus you can check on the status and history of your account as well as transfer funds to a classmate. See “Wireless printing” for how to access this system on your wireless computer.
  1. Sign into any lab computer.
  2. When the printing account Balance window pops up on your screen, click on Details and you will be presented with a login page. Sign in with your Capilano UserID (e.g. firstnamelastname) and 6-character PIN (same as webmail, computer sign-in, etc.).
  3. Once you’ve successfully signed in you are shown a summary of your account.
Use the links on the navigation bar on the left side of the PaperCut screen to view your transaction history (purchased credits), recent print jobs or to transfer credits from your account to someone else’s.

This summary is also good for keeping track of your account at a glance. For example, if on the Activity graph you notice a sharp decline in your balance for a day that you weren’t on campus, someone - hopefully a friend - may have been using your account while you were away. Time to change your PIN! Remember, just like a credit card - you are responsible for the safety and security of your PIN!

This website is also where you can access Web Print, enabling you to print to a campus printer from your own wireless notebook. See the "Wireless Printing" section.

Make sure that you click Log Out when you are done.

How do I add credits to my account?

If using a lab computer, you will receive an on-screen message when your PaperCut account is almost empty. You will then need to use one of the two Print Pay Stations to top up your account. These are located just outside the main Library doors and on the second floor of the Fir building.

Using the Print Pay Stations

  1. Press any key on the keyboard to deactivate the screensaver or wake the station up.
  2. Enter your Capilano UserID and PIN to sign in.
Note: For your own security, you will be automatically signed out after 30 seconds of inactivity.
  3. Once signed in a summary of your account is shown. Deposit bills or coins into the machine and the account balance shown will update as you do so.
  4. When you are finished, click Done to log out.
Note: Print credits are nonrefundable but may be transferred to another user. For this utility as well as others, see “How do I view my PaperCut account?”

How do I print?

Whether in a classroom computer lab or at a Library workstation, you print as you would from any computer - use File/Print or CTRL+P.  To change your choice of printer, click on the drop-down list at the top of the Printer window.
Once you have chosen to print your document, PaperCut will give you its summary options as seen here.

If a printer jams

  • If a printer is down when you send your document, you will receive a message that the printer is disabled and your job will not be charged to your account.
  • If the printer jams while printing your job, PaperCut will cancel the charge to your account. If this fails to happen, immediately contact IT Services or visit the IT HelpDesk in the Library. They will be able to reverse an accidental charge for a failed print job.

Colour printing on campus

At this time, the only colour printer on campus is the Multi Function Device in the CLC. When using a CLC computer, the Colour MFD is available as a Printer option when you print your document.
  1. Send your print job to this printer, and go to the Multi Function Device.
  2. Touch the Username button on the screen. This will activate the keyboard screen.
  3. Enter your Capilano UserID (e.g. firstnamelastname) using the touch screen keyboard. Press OK.
  4. Touch Password and enter your 6-character PIN (same as webmail, computer sign-in, etc.). Press OK.
  5. Touch Login.
  6. Touch the on-screen button, “Select and Release Print Jobs”.
  7. Select the document which you would like to print.
  8. When that prints, you may then select another document if you have sent more than one, or log out of the MFD.
Note: For your own security, you will be automatically signed out after 30 seconds of inactivity.

Wireless printing (Web Print)

  1. Ensure that you are connected to one of Capilano’s wireless networks (for details, visit our wireless page).
  2. Go to Web Print and sign in using your Capilano UserID and PIN. You are then shown a summary of your account.
  3. On the left, click Web Print to begin the process (to see what this looks like, look under “How do I view my PaperCut account?”).
  4. Select the appropriate printer from the list and click Submit Print Job.
  5. Just follow the prompts.
Note that WebPrint will only accept PDF documents at this time. We are working towards expanding this capability to include Microsoft Office documents. So for now, in order to print Office documents or web pages, etc., you must first convert them to PDF format. There are many free tools available on the internet which will allow you to do so quite easily. A web search of “Top Free PDF Maker Reviews” will point you in the right direction.

How do I photocopy?

We are in the midst of changing the copying system to the same one that we now use for printing. Currently the only copier which uses this new system is the colour copier in the CLC (Computer Learning Centre at the Library).
To use all other copiers in the Library you will need to add credits to your student card. Do this using either of the machines just outside of the Library main doors or inside the Library and next to the Elevator. Then simply follow the posted instructions in the Library copier rooms.

Copying using PaperCut

To conserve energy, the colour photocopier in the CLC may be ‘sleeping.’ If the green ON button, far right top, is not lit, press it once. If the touch screen is dark, touch it or lift the copier lid.
PaperCut will not allow you to make a print or copy that your account cannot afford.
  1. Touch the Username button on the screen. This will activate the keyboard screen.
  2. Enter your UserID using the touch screen keyboard. Press OK.
  3. Touch Password and enter your 6-character PIN. Press OK.
  4. Touch Login.
Note: For your own security, you will be automatically signed out after 30 seconds of inactivity.
  5. Now press the COPY button on the left side of the copier panel and follow the instructions on screen.
  6. To sign out press the PaperCut button then press Logout.
