Wilderness Leadership Certificate Program

View the current program profiles for both the Wilderness Leadership Program and the Advanced Wilderness Leadership Program.

The program is offered in a 20-week block starting in early August and ending by mid December. Most courses are field based, and students camp in tents for up to six days at a time. Core courses involve lectures and lab components, which are held in Squamish.

When entering the program you are asked to select and enroll in one of the following skill sets. Each set of six skills provides you with proficiency with either land or water travel. The Land Travel unit is a starting point for those seeking skill development along the land based route. The Water Travel unit is filled with certifications for those who aspire to guide in aquatic situations. Please note courses may be subject to change.

Land Travel Skill Set: Rock Climbing 1 & 2, Backpacking, Canoeing 1, Sea Kayaking 1 & Mountaineering
Water Travel Skill Set: Rafting 1, Sailing 1, Canoeing 1 & 2, Sea Kayaking 1 & River Kayaking

In addition to these skills courses, all studetns take six core courses including:

  • Interpreting The Outdoor Environment
  • Natural History for Outdoor Leaders
  • Wilderness Leadership Skills
  • Guiding Leadership
  • Communications for Outdoor Leaders
  • Advanced Wilderness First Aid

Upon application to the program, you will be asked if you wish to join the Land Travel skill set or the Water skill set. Skills courses are not interchangeable.

Graduation Requirements
Requirement: A Wilderness Leadership certificate will be awarded upon successful completion of all core and skills courses with a minimum C (2.00) cumulative GPA. Students are expected to maintain satisfactory performance in all core and Wilderness Leadership skills courses. Students falling below this level may be asked to leave the program.
