Wilderness Leadership Advanced Certificate Program
Many graduates continue on to complete the Advanced Certificate. This includes second level courses such as Rafting 2 and Sea Kayaking 2. It also includes exposure to the winter environment, with courses in Winter Skills, Ski Touring, and Nordic Skiing. It contains a three week practicum placement within the industry to gain work experience.
We consider the Advanced Certificate to be a student’s best opportunity to gain employment in the industry. Most of the courses include certification, and the core courses build industry knowledge.
Students do not follow skill sets in the advanced program, but instead have the option to pick what skills that interest them. They are required to pick four (2-credit) skills courses to fulfill the graduation requirements for the Advanced Certificate. Course offered in the Advanced Program are subject to change, but currently (2010) they include:
- Winter Skills
- Ski Touring 1
- Nordic 1 & 2
- Sailing 1
- Sea Kayaking 1
- Rafting 1 & 2
- River Rescue Clinic
In addition to these skills courses, students are also required to take three core courses. These include:
- WLP 152 - Wilderness Leadership Practicum
- TOUR 208 - Risk Management and Legal Liability
- REC 111 - Commercial Outdoor Recreation
The Advanced Certificate gives students an additional 16 credits. Acceptance into the Wilderness Leadership Program does not automatically result in acceptance to the Advanced program.
