KAYA DOREY Builds career with Fairmont Hotels
"Prior to enrolling in the Tourism Management Program at Capilano University, along with most other twenty year-olds, I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do. Tourism seemed like an interesting subject and something that might be able to keep my interest for more than a year, so I enrolled. After several weeks in the program, I realized that I hadn’t just enrolled in a tourism program but a program that would set me up with the knowledge and skills for any venture that I decided to pursue, tourism or not.
The variety of courses helped prepare me for my co-op and future endeavours. The small class size ensured that we were learning in a consistent environment and getting the attention we needed from our dedicated teachers.
My co-op experience at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler was one of the best experiences of my life and was made possible by Capilano University and the Tourism Department. All the teachers were extremely helpful in finding us co-op placements for the summer and preparing us for working in the industry. My co-op gave me a chance to network and gain experience in the industry which set me up for success once I finished my diploma.
Now having finished the program, I am currently employed at the Fairmont Pacific Rim and plan to head back to Whistler for another season or four at the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Working for the Fairmont has been a rewarding and challenging experience and without having done the program ahead of time I wouldn't have the same opportunities as I do now.
Overall, the Tourism Management Program has been extremely beneficial in helping steer me in a more focused direction. This program has opened many doors for me and has prepared me for many different avenues of life, whether I want to be in hospitality, adventure tourism, marketing, PR and much more."
