How to Apply

The program starts in September and interviews for acceptance are held in May and, if space is available, in August. Applications for interviews should be received by the end of April. Late applications will be considered if space is available. Contact the visual and Performing Arts Division office for more details.

Information Meetings

All students interested in either the diploma program or the certificate program are required to attend an information session. They will be scheduled throughout the year and interested applicants will be notified of dates. The schedule of Information Meetings can be viewed through the Capilano University Web site or check out the Information Sessions page on our website. 

Admission into Textile Arts Diploma Program

Prospective students are admitted on the basis of a portfolio interview. No previous experience in textile arts is required. Students should bring a maximum of 10 pieces of work to the interview. Any combination of media are accepted in textiles, paintings, photographs, ceramics, drawings etc. Slides or photographs can be shown instead of actual works.

Students without previous art background, but with suitable experience will also be considered.

Students who have English as a second language are required to pass an Admission Requirements test.

Admission into the Advanced Textile Arts Certificate Program

Students are expected to have two years of studies in visual arts at the psot-secondary level with courses in the following areas for a combined total of 24 credits: Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Ceramics, Weaving, Surface Design and Fashion Design. In addition they should have one year or six credits in each of the following areas: Design, Drawing, Art History or Visual Literacy, English or Communications. No previous experience in textile arts is required.

A portfolio and an interview are also required for admission. Students who miss some of the above prerequisites may be admitted into the advanced program on the condition that they take these courses before graduating. Some part-time options may be possible with the coordinator's approval.

Contact the Fine and Performing Arts Department to arrange an interview. Interviews are held in May and some additional interviews may be scheduled in August, space permitting. Evening interviews are available. Send the following documentation to the Registrar's Office,

  • Completed Capilano University Application for Admission
  • Secondary and post-secondary transcripts
  • Official copies of English Language Assessment (ELA) Test or Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), if applicable
  • Questionnaires

Transfer Credits

Courses marked with an asterisk (e.g. AHIS 105*) carry transferability to UBC, SFU, UVic and other academic degree -granting institutions. Other courses can be transferred to programs which include textile arts in their curriculum.

Students should understand that advanced standing in any institution is usually based on an interview and a portfolio submission, as well as credits. Please check the B.C.
