Guatemala Field School

 

Climb above the jungle canopy to the top of the highest temple of an ancient Meso-american Mayan kingdom.  Descend into the catacombs of monasteries establish between 1543-1547 and follow the trail of the first Spanish explorers to set foot in the "New World."  Learn about the economic, social and political factors which have shaped Guatemala from colonization to the present.

Guatemala Field School

  

Presented by Faculty of Arts and Sciences, the Guatemala Field School offers a 3 credit course taught one evening a week from January 9-February 16 and March 6th to April 13th.  Sociology 210 - Current Social Issues includes a Field School to Guatemala from February 17th - 27th.  Through individual research projects and group presenations,students will earn 3 credits in Sociology while learning about the institutions and social movements that have shaped Guatemalan society in a global context. 

This course and field school is open to:

  1. Capilano University Students and Staff
  2. Community Members
  3. Students from other post-secondary institutions 

 

STANDARD ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

· Applicants must be nineteen (19) or older before departure and be in good academic standing. Students under nineteen require permission of their parent/ guardian.

· Staff and students from institutions other than Capilano University are eligible to participate (however, students from other institutions must qualify for admission to Capilano University as ‘Visiting Students’.)

 

ITINERARY

February 17 – 18:

Guatemala City and Chichicastenango

Sample Mayan Food, Art and Handicrafts on a busy market-day in the Guatemalan Highlands

 

February 18 – 20:

UnESco/World Heritage Site -- Antigua

Live in Convento Belen and explore the rich colonial legacy of the site where the Mayan and Catholic traditions first intersected

 

February 20 – 22:

Del Monte School Exchange

Experience life on a banana plantation and participate in a cultural exchange with local students and teachers

 

February 22 – 23:

Tikal

Tour the Mayan ruins at the crack of dawn and explore one of the largest biospheres in Central America

 

February 23 – 25:

Livingston

Sail up the Rio Dulce past Spanish fortresses and explore the Caribbean coastal town the Garifuna people call “home”

 

February 25 – 27:

Guatemala city

Interview Social Activists and Guerilla Leaders about their role in the 36 year long civil war; discuss recent elections and the achievements of the peace process

 

COSTS AND FEES

The cost to participate in the Guatemala Field School 2012 is $3,000.00 CDN. This includes:

  • Round trip airfare and accommodation
  • Excursions and groud transfers
  • Program Operational Fees
  • Entrance tickets to national parks and museums
  • Tuition for a 3 credit Capilano Course

  • Study Tour Agreement
  • Letter of Intent
  • Photcopy of identification page in passport (must be valid through August 2012)
  • Cheque deposit of $350 made out to Capilano University

In addition to the above, students are required to submit:
