Disciplines
Drawing
Using a variety of media, and with a strong design emphasis, students explore various conceptual, perceptual and technical aspects of the drawing process. These investigations enable each student to develop a personal approach to drawing, and to use it as an integral part of any other art courses they may take.
Duration: one four-hour class each week during each of the four terms.
Media Art
Students learn a combination of chemical photography and digital imaging, installation, video, sound, performance and public art, as they relate to visual art practice. The objective is to provide students with hands-on production experience while familiarizing them with the various visual and textual discourses that surround contemporary art making.

Ceramics
Students will develop skills in traditional and contemporary clay-forming methods, including hand building, throwing, casting and moulding as well as selected glaze and decorative processes. The examination of various aspects of ceramic design and applications will be undertaken, which will enable students to select an approach to ceramics suitable to their individual needs and aspirations.
Duration: one four-hour class plus a three-hour lab each week during each of four terms.
Painting
Students learn to identify and replicate colour effectively. They develop skills using acrylic and oil paints on a variety of surfaces and are expected to work through a number of projects, including both abstract and representational themes, as well as a thematically linked series of work.
Duration: one four-hour class each week for each of four terms.
Printmaking
Printmaking facilities include the equipment necessary for professional editioning in advanced colour intaglio, relief, silkscreen, collagraph, large scale work (up to 56" x 87") or photo/digital printmaking. The studio is equipped with Imagon and Zacryil technologies, a 58" x 97" etching press, a Mac lab and a 42" HP Z6200 PS UV printer.
Duration: one four-hour class plus a 1.5 hour lab each week during each of the four terms.
Sculpture
Students respond to social/environmental and interactive assignments through a wide exploration of processes including assemblage, wood joinery and moulding/casting of refractories and metals. Both non-objective and figurative expression are investigated in light of historical and current sculptural ideologies.
Duration: one four-hour class plus a three-hour lab each week during each of the four terms.
Art History and Visual Culture
A study of the history of world art, the development of contemporary art and visual literacy, this series of courses helps students put their own artistic endeavours into context.
Duration: one four-hour class each week during each of the first three terms.

Contemporary Practices
This course is designed to expose students to the world of contemporary art by considering the present, the future and the nature of art process. Visiting artists from a variety of disciplines will share their insights about their work and practice. The theoretical component of the course will be delivered through lectures, readings, discussions and assignments.
English
Studio Art students may select their English credits from a wide range of courses offered by the English department. The choices range from composition to poetry, literature and drama.
Please note: We recommend you discuss your English requirements with the program coordinator.
Students must be available for the labs attached to Ceramics, Media Art, Printmaking and Sculpture and therefore must be sure that any courses taken outside of Studio Art do not conflict.
Studio Art facilities are available to both full and part-time students outside of class time when these rooms are not occupied by other classes.
