How to Apply

If you are interested in applying to the Special Education Assistant Program, please complete this two step process.

North Vancouver campus:  We are currently accepting applications for August 2012 intake (summer term). Contact us to place your name on our interest list and we will notify you of the next information session once scheduled.

Step 1. Apply To Capilano University

You must meet the admission requirements for the program and be admitted to the University prior to being admitted to the Special Education Assistant Program. 

After completing the on-line application process, or filling out an application for admission form (Apply for Admission/Readmission), you will need to submit your official transcripts and document evaluation fee (where required) by mail to the Registrar's Office.

Step 2: Apply To The Special Education Assistant Program

Attend A Program Information Meeting

This is a mandatory requirement for our application process. Meetings are generally scheduled from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on weeknights.

Please call our office at 604.984.4960 to register for one of the Information Meetings or Contact Us.

Complete A 30-Minute Written English Placement Test

This will be available for you to take at the conclusion of the Program Information Meeting.

Provide All Documents Required For Program Admission

These are all the documents identified in the Admission Requirements EXCEPT for your educational transcripts which will be attached to your Capilano University Admission Application.

To make it easy for yourself, you may choose to bring all these required Program Admission documents to the Program Information Meeting and submit them at that time. That way they will be considered for the next step, the interview with faculty, and you will be contacted within 4 weeks of the Program Information Meeting.

  • Provide a handwritten Letter of Interest describing why you would like to enter the field of special education and why you would be an excellent candidate for admission. Please be sure to include a telephone number where you may be contacted.
  • Updated resume.
  • Three (3) letters of reference, from employers or responsible persons in the community, one of which must certify the successful completion of volunteer or paid experience working with children or adolescents.
  • A criminal record check must be obtained through our SEA department.  For information, see Criminal Record Check
  • Letter from an employer or teacher verifying that you are computer literate and able to perform basic computer operations.

Documents may also be dropped off at Cedar building, 3rd floor reception (south end of building by elevators).  Reception hours are Monday to Thursday 8:30 am - 3:00 pm and Friday 8:30 am - 12:30 pm.

Pre-screening Selection

Applicants who submit all documentation by the set deadline indicated at each Information Session; will be considered by the SEA Department's screening committee.  Shortlisted candidates will be contacted by phone 1-2 weeks after submission deadline to attend an oral group interview with faculty.

Attend An Interview With Faculty

Attend the interview with faculty at the scheduled date, time and location. We look forward to hearing about your career goals!

Notification of Application Results

Candidates are notified by mail one week following the interview regarding their acceptance. If accepted into the program, details regarding the registration procedure will be outlined in the acceptance letter.
