Rehabilitation Assistant Diploma Program

The Rehabilitation Assistant Diploma Program at Capilano University is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop the scientific and rehabilitation knowledge, theory, practical and communication skills as well as professional values and attitudes necessary to provide a vital supporting role in delivering efficient and effective rehabilitation services. The program includes classroom study, practical application, case study integration and clinical fieldwork.

There are 4 terms of study in the two year Diploma program that are completed in 1.5 years:

  • musculoskeletal
  • psycho/cognitive, mental health and cardiorespiratory
  • neurology
  • community integration

There are 3 fieldwork placements under the supervision of a therapist.

Graduates of the program will:

  • demonstrate professional behaviour
  • promote optimal client independence
  • implement treatment plans with clinical supervision of an OT, PT or SLPA
  • provide training according to the treatment plan in a variety of mobility, communication, self-care, work and leisure activities
  • observe and report to the clinician and team on services delivered
  • provide administrative and operational support

A few specific examples of practical components upon successful program completion may include:

  • leading group exercise classes (in pool, on land)
  • teaching transfers to clients and family members
  • developing communication boards
  • applying electro-muscle stimulators
  • assisting therapists with swallowing assessments
