Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Outdoor Recreation program only for students who have just graduated from high school?

No. Many Outdoor Recreation students have just left high school, but we have many students enter the program who have already been attending college or university.  And a number of students have been working for some time, and have returned to University to begin their degree.

When can I enter the program?

We select 30 students to start the Outdoor Recreation Management program every August.  Classes begin on the last Monday in August.  There are no intakes into the program in either the spring or the summer semesters.

Do I have to complete the program in 2 years?

The program is designed for you to complete the cohort courses in two years.

When do I do my practicum?

Students in the second year of the program begin their 14 week practicum in May of their third semester.

Does the OREC program supply the practicum position?

The OREC program has excellent contacts for practicum positions both local and international.  Students are expected to secure their own practicum position.  We have found that this helps students develop the job search and networking skills they will need to succeed in their careers.  In many cases, companies, organizations and agencies let us know about their practicum opportunities, and this information is of course passed on to the class.

I already have a degree. Is the Outdoor Recreation Program for me?

The Outdoor Recreation program is still for you.  It has been designed for those with or without a degree, who wish to explore a career in Outdoor Recreation.

Am I guaranteed a job when I graduate from the Outdoor Recreation Program?

There are two major advantages to taking the Outdoor Recreation program from an employment perspective.  First of all, you will enter early into the Outdoor Recreation network, and it is through this network that most jobs are filled.  Secondly, graduates of the Outdoor Recreation Program meet the fast growing job market with a valuable education that is practical and applied to the field of Outdoor Recreation.  Those who plan to pursue a career in Outdoor Recreation will benefit from completing a Bachelor's degree.

What is the deadline for applying?

The best time to apply is between January and April 15th.  During this period you must attend an information session and an interview.
