Basic mountain bike riding skills.

Equipment requirements:

Mountain bike:

  • Mountain Bike with front suspension or dual suspension
  • Flat or clipless pedals (Flat pedals preferred for REC 175 course)
  • Mountain Bike will have to be maintained in good operational standards throughout the program
  • McLeod tool (1 per student)
  • Pulaski tool (1 per student)
  • Shovel

Note:  The University can order McLeod & Pulaski tools for students.

Safety gear:

  • Bike helmet approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or the U.S. Consumer Protection Safety Commission (US CPSC)
  • Leg armour (protects knees and shins)
  • Arm armour (protects elbows and forearms) optional
  • Reliable and trustworthy bike lock
  • Hydration system (water bottles or bladder)
  • Backpack for guiding (i.e.: medium size backpack to fit repair gear and first aid gear)
  • Riding gloves
  • Riding protective eyewear
  • Rain gear (jackets & pants)
  • Work pants
  • Work gloves
  • Steel-Toe Boots

Additional items may be added before or during the program

Equipment repair gear:

  • Chain repair tool
  • Set of allen keys
  • Spare tubes or patching kit
  • Tire levers
  • Air pump
  • Small container of bike lubricant
  • Spoke wrench
  • Repair tape
  • 6” slip joint pliers or 6” adjustable wrench
  • Swiss Army knife or utility tool
  • Bandana or paper towel

First aid gear:

  • Small First aid manual
  • Sterile gauze
  • Adhesive tape
  • Triangular bandages
  • Adhesive bandages in several sizes
  • Elastic bandage
  • Emergency blanket
  • Tweezers
  • Utility knife (like a Swiss army knife)
  • 2 pairs of medical (non latex) gloves
  • Alcohol wipes
  • Antiseptic solution (like hydrogen peroxide)
  • Sunscreen
  • Cotton swabs
  • Rigid piece of cardboard to act as a splint
  • Micro-shield mask for CPR
