Can a student start the program in January? Only take some of the classes?
There are four Mountain Bike Operations courses offered in the January term.
TOUR 118 – Event Management
CMNS 154 – Communications
TOUR 208 – Risk Management
TOUR 172 – Park and Trail Design and Building II
The TOUR 172 course has TOUR 170 (Park and Trail Design and Building I) as a pre-requisite. TOUR 170 is offered in the Fall Term. TOUR 118, CMNS 154 and TOUR 208 do not have pre-requisite and can be taken by a student who has not completed the Fall term. An application to the Mountain Bike Operations Program is required for students wishing to take any course in the program.
How much of the course is theory and practical?
On a total of nine courses, five courses are considered academic and four are considered practical (ie: skills based). The academic courses are traditional post-secondary courses; they are classroom based and cover the theory behind a particular topic. The practical courses are more skill based and have a field component associated to them. A theoretical component is also included in all practical courses. All of our nine courses have a rigorous assessment profile and students will be required to hand in projects, do presentations, write essays, complete mid-term and final exams, etc. To obtain the Mountain Bike Operations Certificate all courses must receive a satisfactory pass and an overall “C” average is required.
