Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies Degree
360 degree thinking
Do humans have ethical obligations to the natural world? How are writing and literature being transformed by digital and social media? What is democracy?
These are not simple questions, but an understanding of complex issues like these can emerge when we explore the world from more than one direction. This is why Capilano University developed the Liberal Studies BA.
This multidisciplinary degree cultivates thoughtful, articulate and resourceful graduates who are able to make meaningful connections between areas of investigation as varied as the economy and aesthetics, art history and genetic engineering, and the environment and psychology.
In the first two years, you will get a broad foundation in the Humanities, Social Sciences and Pure & Applied Sciences. This lower-level foundation prepares you for the sustained critical inquiries and focused research projects of upper-level courses. Classes are kept small to encourage lively discussion and debate. Each term, a variety of courses explore a common topic such as sustainability, security and revolution so that you begin to see issues from different perspectives.
During your final two years of study, the LSBA Tutorials and Graduating Projects will provide you with an opportunity to explore your own topic from a variety of perspectives. The topic you choose to explore will become the basis of your graduating project, which is the culmination of your four-year degree, not to mention an impressive portfolio piece to show prospective employers. In short, the Liberal Studies degree offers a personal and purposeful approach to learning.
This program is open to both full- and part-time students.
