What is Interactive Design?

Interactive Design is an intensive 2-year learning experience for creative people. The Interactive Design program prepares aspiring individuals to enter the new media industry with specialized skills in website and mobile application design and development, information architecture, usability, rich media production and online community management. The program focuses on the design and production of effective websites and web-based applications that deliver interactive content through an efficient and  effective user experience. 

What skills will I learn?

You will learn practical skills to envision, design, and produce web and mobile technology solutions in a professional setting. Conceptual design skills include information architecture, visual interface design, usability and interaction design. Core skills in industry software for web design and development include Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash. Web development concepts and skills include standards-based HTML & CSS, JavaScript, Flash Actionscript, PHP, and mySQL. Rich media production skills include digital photography, digital audio, digital video, and web video.  Industry skills include self-marketing and business practices, project management, communications, job search and industry networking, portfolio development, presentation, and 6 weeks of professional, on-the-job, internship experience.

What are the job opportunities?

The new media industry is very vibrant and there are strong demands for talented and skilled people! Work as a web developer, web designer, flash designer, flash developer, production designer, information architect, interaction designer, usability specialist, online community manager, webmaster, or media producer.

Why do I need to buy a computer for this program?

A state-of-the-art Mac OS X laptop provides you with a contemporary and portable computing platform. It enables unbridled 24/7 access to essential tools and services. Combined with the software tools, you are equipped to work in the industry. We set an acquisition date for computer purchase so you will benefit from having the most up-to-date equipment. Most students are eligible for a student developer computer discount.

What advantages will I graduate with?

You will graduate with a recognized 2 year Diploma. You can further tailor your education and portfolio to your unique areas of interest through our 6 instructional streams. You will have developed industry contacts, an online portfolio of completed projects, and a strong set of skills keyed to industry needs. Your resume will include industry experience gained through program projects and a 6 week internship, as well as work you may complete for real-world clients. 

Am I a good candidate for this program?

Do you love to solve problems creatively, think analytically, learn new skills, and value collaboration and teamwork? These are all desirable traits for this program and for the interactive design industry. The program is challenging and requires focus, a strong work ethic, the ability to set priorities and complete tasks, and the motivation to excel. We provide a positive and supportive learning environment to challenge you to do your best. 

Do you offer part-time courses?

No. The course is currently a full-time two year Diploma program with classes starting in September. Classes run September - April.

How do I apply?

Follow these steps:

Step 1. Apply online ; you may also mail your application but it takes longer.

Step 2. Send the following documents directly to the Interactive Design department office :
• resume
• copies of transcripts
• optional letters of reference

Step 3. Attend an interview, bringing 2-3 samples of your creative work which could include:
• writing, video, sound, media files or digital design (non-returnable copies)
• original visual art, crafts, etc.(to be taken away with you after the interview)
• current URLs of online work
