Internship Positions 2011 Available Internships in 2011--For illustration only. .

For information on Internship Positions which were available in 2011, please open the pdf. above.   Soon we will list the internships available for 2012. Most, if not all, of the locations in the above will be available again in 2012.

The DEADLINE for receiving applications (3), the faculty referral (1), the commital letter (1),  and the administration fee of $500 is February 28, 2011.

A student who is requesting an internship should indicate this on the Tour application form. Provided the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade renewes its grant, some travel support (ranging from $750 to $1000, depending on the number of internships awarded) will be paid to the intern on the successful completion of the internship and submission of the internship report and signed by the internship supervisor at the host institution.  Interns are responsible for accommodation and other living costs.

READ the information below carefully. Forms for your use are posted  on the right column of this page. Please use them  after reviewing  the list of internships. You will need to take some time to ensure you have all the information to complete the forms.  Find the web site of the organization or agency with which you are seeking an internship so that you are clear about its purpose, mission and goals.  In certain cases the host institution has provided an indication of the expected tasks and a profile may be available on the web site.  Take this information into account when making your applicaton. MAKE A FULL APPLICATION FOR EACH POSITION FOR WHICH YOU WISH TO BE CONSIDERED. Provide your faculty sponsor with the referral letter which must be submitted separately by the referee to the email address indicated on the referral form.

How to apply for an Internship

Step 1 Your application for an Internship is made on condition that you have or will be accepted for the EU Study Tour. There are a variety of internships and conditions attach to some. Read the information on the web site carefully. Become familiar with the forms on the web site. These are in Word format and are to be submitted by email; only submissions in Word format are accepted (do not send pdf. documents).

Step 2  Apply for three internships indicating your priority ranking—this allows for you to be considered for alternatives if you are not successful in obtaining your first choice. Apply for the internships using the forms supplied on the web site and submit them, after consultation with your sponsoring faculty person, by email to the Director (Administration) at elavalle@capilanou.ca.   The Internship Selection Committee makes the seection and assignment; in certain cases the selection process involves the host institution.

Step 3 Your internship application must be supported by a faculty reference. The faculty member providing the reference should forward the referral to the Director (Administration). The application and referral forms are in Word format and should be submitted in that form to: elavalle@capilanou.ca.

Note: you need only submit the forms, covering letters are not required and if received are not considered.

Step 4 Dr. Alexandre Berlin, Director (Program in Europe) will notify you of the result of the selection process and ask you to confirm your assignment.

Please note that the administration fee of $500 is assessed to partly cover the administrative costs related to processing your application prior to the start of the internship.  If you are assigned one of the internships that you have selected and decide that you do not wish to take up the interniship you will not  be reimbursed the $500 fee.  Only in exceptional circumstances (medical and compassionate) will reimbursement be considered.  If the Internship Selection Committee proposes an internship position to you which is not one of the internships chosen by you, you may decline and receive full reimbursement of your administration fee. If you are not offered an internship you will be reimbursed the full amount of the fee paid at the time of application.

More  information..............................

The internships provide significant added value for the students who participate in the Study Tour and take up an internship following the end of the Study Tour.  Interns experience the daily work in the institutions and participate actively in the activities of the host institutions, including research and the preparation of documents. Many of the participating academic institutions have recognized this added benefit and provide academic credit for the internships. Furthermore the host institutions receiving the interns have expressed their satisfaction with the work done by the interns and this is key to their continued cooperation with the Network in sponsoring internships. The nature of the work at host institutions are set out in the initial week of the internship and generally involve, research, policy development and analysis, report writing, and often involve attending meetings. Most interns are quickly absorbed into the life of the host institution.

General conditions and requirements

Priority is given to qualified graduate students; however fourth year undergraduates are also eligible for internships.

Your home university may give academic credit for participation in the internship program, perhaps in conjunction with credit for the Study Tour. This aspect is totally at the discretion of the local institution but is greatly appreciated by the Network.

The Academic Coordinating Committee applies clear and rigorous criteria for the selection of the interns who are recommended by the sponsoring faculty members; hence a standard application form which sets out the areas of interest in meeting the criteria.

Because of the financial burden that these internships represent to the student, the Network always endeavors to provide some financial support for interns to cover some of their expenses (for many years, a grant for each student has been provided by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada--we are pleased to confirm grants for 2011.

The Study Tour administration and participating universities will ensure that information on the internships opportunities in provided in a timely manner. Therefore, as soon as we have the information we provide information on the activities in which the interns will likely be involved and the type of projects on which they will be expected to work. Early matching of student interests with internship opportunities will allow the students to prepare in advance for the internships.

Equitable distribution of the internships between the participating academic institutions will be ensured.  Priority is given to applications from Network institutions.

In the first two weeks of the Study Tour program, time will be set aside for the interns to meet with their respective host institutions to provide interns with relevant additional information.

Evaluation of internship experience is an important factor in developing future internships; hence each participant is required to provide a Completion Report of the internship experience, including a report from the suprvisor at the host institution.

The Director (Program in Europe), Alexandre Berlin,  will provide support for the interns during the internship period and provide a valuable opportunity for the interns to exchange experiences and further network.

The Director (Program in Europe) will convene meetings (at least several during the internship period) for the interns in Brussels and maintain close contact with the interns in other European locations. During these meetings the interns can exchange their internship experience, describing their tasks as well as problems and network between themselves. The Director will assist in resolving problems.

Insurance

Students who remain in Europe for an internship MUST have sufficient travel and medical insurance to cover both the Study Tour and the duration of the internship. Some institutions will require personal liability insurance.  Please consult with Ed Lavalle, Director, EUST&IP, on whether this will be required.  Personal liability insurance is often included in a person's home insurance package and you should determine this information before inquring.
