**NEW English Awards and Scholarships**
Third Year English Scholarship (Fall/Spring)
• Two 300-level English course waivers will be offered annually, one at the end of the fall term and one at the end of the spring term.
• To qualify students must have excelled in one 200-level English course and should have a GPA of 3.5.
• Students will be nominated by their instructors.
• The Scholarship Committee reserves the right not to make an award in any given semester.
Student Vision Award (Fall)
• One $500 award will be given annually at the end of the fall term to a student who writes an outstanding text on a topical student issue.
• Details about the issue and the genre of the text will be posted on the English department website at the start of the fall term. See italics below for Fall 2011.
o Fall 2011: Issue – Student Debt; Genre—Creative response ( such as creative non-fiction, short story, series of poems) or essay (research or personal). Length—1,000 words long of maximum 8 pages. Deadline for nomination—December 2nd 2011.
• To qualify a student must be registered in any English course.
• Applicants should ask their instructor to nominate them.
• The Scholarship Committee reserves the right not to make an award in any given year.
The English Department offers a number of scholarships and awards, some of which take the form of cash grants and others the form of fee waivers at the domestic student tuition rate.
Procedures for these awards vary: students may apply for some themselves, but for others an instructor must nominate them. Winners will be notified of their awards by a letter from the Financial Aid and Awards office.
