Angela DEZIEL

Angela DEZIEL, BA (Ottawa), MA (Queen’s), PhD (Ottawa)

Angela DezielBorn and raised in Canada’s Capital, Angela grew up near Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal, and Algonquin Park. Despite the landscape, Angela became neither a politician, nor a long distance skater, nor a park ranger. Instead, Angela pursued a degree in Psychology; however, her life-long passion for creative writing eventually compelled her to switch into English while at the University of Ottawa. It was there that her interest in the contemporary Irish novel and all things Canadian Literature flourished. Her dissertation “Out of Ireland: Towards A Critical History of the Irish in Early Canadian Literature” allowed for the amalgamation of her two passions, and her research interests continue to be in this area. Further interests include dystopic fiction, travel writing, and the mythological and Dantean structures of the journey motif. For the past five years, Angela taught Prose Fiction, Children’s Literature, and Academic Writing at the University of Ottawa. She recently presented a paper, “The Irish Anna Jameson,” at the University of Ottawa’s annual Canadian Literature Symposium and will soon begin editing Thomas Chandler Haliburton’s The Clockmaker (First Edition) for the Canadian Critical Edition series.
