English Diagnostic Test

Applicants planning to enrol in any Arts & Sciences English course at Capilano University are required to take Capilano University's English Diagnostic Test (EDT), or the Language Proficiency Index (LPI), unless they qualify for an exemption

These tests assess English usage and composition ability. They are designed to assist BC Colleges and Universities in placing incoming students at the most appropriate English course level. Test scores will not be used as a basis for general admission to Capilano University. However, these scores may be required for acceptance into specific programs.

Two versions of these tests exist. Capilano University administers the EDT, which is held on campus. The EDT results are designed for placement into Capilano University English courses only. The LPI is administered by Paragon Testing Enterprises (a subsidiary of the University of British Columbia) and is held in large sittings in schools and test centres throughout the province. The two tests examine the same skills and are similar in format. The EDT fee is $40; the LPI fee is $109 plus tax.

If you wish to write the Capilano University English Diagnostic Test, please pick up an EDT registration form from outside the Registrar's Office (Birch 230), the University Info Centre (Birch 212) or the Humanities Offices (Fir 404), pay the $40 fee in advance at the Cashier's Office, and bring your receipt with you to the test.  Students unable to pick up the registration form and/or pay for the test in person may find alternate instructions here.

The EDT includes the writing of a 300-500 word expository composition. Each composition will be marked for development, structure, sentence construction, and word choice. Photo ID is required to write the test and please bring a pen with you. You will be allowed two hours to write the EDT. No dictionaries or electronic devices (cell phones, smart phones, etc) are allowed in the exam.

For the most current schedule of EDT test dates, please click on the link below: EDT Schedule.

Students may pick up their results from the Registrar's Office (BR230). Please allow for a minimum of 24 hours for the tests to be marked and for the results to be submitted to the Registrar's Office.

Students who achieve an EDT placement score at the English 100 level will be able to register for any English 100 level course using the online registration system. Students may go to the Writing Centre in FR 402 to review the results of their EDT and to receive feedback on their essay during normal Writing Centre hours.
