Program Description

The ECCE Post Baccalaureate Diploma Program allows students with undergraduate degrees to study and earn a credential in Early Childhood Care and Education at the post-graduate level; an opportunity that is not widely available. The Diploma allows students to gain new skills and broaden their knowledge in order to advance their career, change career direction, and deepen their understanding of Early Childhood politics and pedagogy.

The Diploma offers students further opportunities to pursue their understandings of the changing global context of child care, education, families, and childhood. It offers advanced perspectives on ECCE practice and teaching, encouraging graduates to continue to develop their abilities as outstanding educators, teachers, and partners in children’s lives.

The diploma may be completed on a full or part-time basis.  Courses are offered daytime and evening, enabling you to schedule a feasible timetable.

The Diploma may raise teacher qualification for those with a 3-year Bachelor's Degree from TQS Category 4 to 5, and for those with a Master's degree, from TQS Category 5 to 6. In school districts that recognize a 5 1/2 category (P.B. + 15, or 5+), the Post Baccalaureate Diploma may serve to achieve this step. Students seeking a reclassification are advised to have their planned program of study reviewed by the Teacher Qualification Service prior to registration. A written commitment from TQS is the only one with any official status.

Admission Requirements

  • Completion of a recognized Bachelor's degree from a university in British Columbia (or the equivalent) with a minimum graduation grade point average of 2.0.

  • English Language Requirement, TOEFL / ELA / IELTS / CAEL for students whose primary language is not English: Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) paper-based requirement = 560, computer-based requirement = 220, internet-based requirement = 83, or English Language Assessment (ELA) requirement = 145, or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) requirement = 6.5 overall, and no one score less than 6, or Canadian Academic English Language Assessment requirement (CAEL) = 70.

  • Submission of Letter of Interest/Intent (maximum 500 words).  Please see guidelines below.

  • Applicants may be required to attend an interview.

Guidelines for Letter of Interest/Intent:

a)  The philosophies that currently shape your teaching practice.
b)  Your professional curiosities, questions, and inquiries that may guide your research and learning.

Notes:

At any time after acceptance to the program, students may be required to submit additional documentation (for example: criminal record check, medical exam, first aid certificate) as required by relevant health and ECE Registry authorities. Some of these items will be required before students are eligible to take courses required for program completion. Students will be notified of requirements as they become necessary.

Prerequisites for courses not included within the Post Baccalaureate Diploma will be waived by the Department.

Students in ECCE Bachelor degree cannot take the Post Baccalaureate Diploma as this program is an integral part of their undergraduate degree. Post Baccalaureate means different courses completed after the undergraduate degree.
