Basic ECCE Certificate

Courses leading to a Basic ECCE Certificate provide students with the basic competencies and knowledge required to work with children in licensed preschools and daycare centres.

When and where are courses offered?

The North Vancouver campus now offers a full-time and part-time option for obtaining a Basic ECCE Certificate. 

Sechelt and Squamish regional campuses may offer part-time programs.

Students should be aware that both full and part-time programs include a number of practicum placements during daytime hours:

  • Year 1 (full-time equivalent): 3-week and 5-week placement
  • Year 2 (full-time equivalent): 5-week placement

In conjunction with Capilano University's International Joint Partnership Projects and Study Abroad several international opportunities have been offered for ECCE students and alumni. These included kindergarten work placements in locations such as Beijing, China and study abroad courses in locations such as England, Sweden and Finland.  Currently, there are no active study abroad or exchange programs being offered.  For more information call 604.984.4960.

How long will it take me to obtain a Basic ECCE Certificate?

This program is 3-terms (full-time equivalency).

What credentials will I gain?

At the end of the program, students are awarded a Basic ECCE certificate. The Basic Certificate and successful completion of the required 500 hours work experience enables students to register as an Early Childhood Educator in British Columbia by applying to the Manager of Early Childhood Programs at the Community Care Licensing Branch.

What are the admission requirements?

Students wishing to enrol in courses leading to a Basic ECCE Certificate must apply to either the Diploma or Degree streams. Applicants should review the admission requirements for their chosen stream:  Diploma stream admission requirements or Degree stream admission requirementsPlease note: students can exit with the Basic Certificate without completing other courses in the Degree / Diploma streams.
