Applications are now being accepted for January and September 2012.  Please indicate on your application which intake term you are applying to.

Admission requirements for ECCE programs are currently under review.  Please come to our next Information Session to receive an update on the changes in effect for 2012 admission.

Capilano ECCE programs focus on leadership in early years practice, research, education, advocacy and administration. The programs are built on the most current knowledge about early childhood and best practices for all young children and families.

Applying to ECCE Diploma or Degree Streams

Students wishing to earn any of the ECCE credentials will apply under either the Diploma or Degree Streams. However, students may choose to switch streams at a later date.

Credentials

In the Capilano ECCE programs students have the opportunity to earn credentials required for working in the early years field.

The ECCE programs provide students with an opportunity to earn the following credentials:

Courses leading to these credentials can be completed consecutively or qualifying students can chose to exit with any earned credentials and return at a later date to obtain other credentials.

Students wishing to earn any of the ECCE credentials will apply under either the Diploma or Degree Streams. However, students may choose to switch streams at a later date.

Students must meet the Capilano University admission requirements AND the ECCE Department admission requirements specific to their desired credential and Stream.

The programs are based on the "Competencies in Early Childhood Education" and are approved by the Community Care Facilities Branch of the Ministry of Health.

Course work

In the Capilano ECCE programs, students have the opportunity to:

  • Engage with historical and contemporary approaches to learning, thinking, and teaching.
  • Learn to provide relevant and responsive caring and educational experiences for young children.
  • Explore approaches to building generative and meaningful partnerships with children, families, colleagues, and community.
  • Critically reflect on the complexities of local and global social justice issues that relate to early childhood.

Learning from children

In the Capilano ECCE programs, theory and practice are closely integrated. Students have the opportunity to observe, document, and learn from children’s rich thinking. Students have practical experience in practicum centres under the guidance of qualified early childhood educators. Students also have the opportunity to learn from children in course assignments and Children Teaching Us .

Inquiry based learning

In the Capilano ECCE programs, students have the opportunity to develop aptitudes and skills for critical thinking, teacher research, and lifelong learning. Courses are presented in a manner which promotes active participation and inquiry. Courses include discussions, demonstrations, oral reports, group projects, and role-play.

Leadership

In the Capilano ECCE programs, students have the opportunity to identify and strengthen qualities and skills for effective leadership. Courses support interdisciplinary perspectives, collaboration, mentoring, professional dispositions and advocacy.
