Question: The program sounds interesting, but what if I don't know very much about technology?
Answer: The program is designed for students interested in exploring how technology impacts the Arts and Social Sciences - both historically and in contemporary culture. The tools at a society's disposal powerfully shape how information is produced and transmitted as well as the kinds of stories/art/culture it produces. These are our focal points.
Question: What type of interests do most students who take this program have?
Answer: In our first group of students, we have a mix of aspiring writers, graphic designers, photographers, journalists, educators, and new media producers.
Question: Can I apply if I am already a Capilano University student?
Answer: Yes. 1) contact the Registrar's Office and let them know that you want to apply for admission to CultureNet; 2) send a letter of intent briefly stating why you are interested in the program to culturenet@capilanou.ca; and 3) make appointment with Advising and/or the CultureNet convenor (culturenet@capilanou.ca) for assistance with course planning.
Question: What kind of careers can this program eventually lead to?
Answer: As a new program, we have yet to produce our first set of graduates. We are introducing our students to new media artists, people in new media/web advertising, writers/journalists, curators/gallery owners, educators, librarians/information management specialists and so forth by way of showing students the breadth of career options with a focus on the play between culture and technology. We anticipate some students will go directly into the work force after two years, others will complete BAs, and yet others will explore related technical training in web/graphic design. CultureNet provides a liberal arts foundation with a twenty-first century twist upon which a career can be built.
