Advanced Professional Communications Certificate

If you have a strong interest in the communications field and want to extend your understanding of theory and history in communications at the same time as you learn practical hands-on communication skills, this eight-month, two semester program may be for you.

Students graduating with the Advanced Certificate in Professional Communications will have foundation acquired level knowledge in the history and theory of communication studies. Therefore, they will be eligible to move into further academic study leading to a Diploma in Communication Studies and eventually to a BA in Communication.

As well, students successfully completing this program will have the knowledge gained in applied communication courses: public speaking, magazine and newspaper journalism, business writing, and strategic communications. They will also understand the job markets in the communication industries, and have the knowledge required to pursue and sustain employment in entry-level communication positions.

Career Prospects and Opportunities for Further Study

This program is designed for students who are aiming at careers in journalism; public, community and government affairs; radio or television; audio visual programming; media administration and research; publishing; communication project development; and writing and editing.

Successful students graduating from the Advanced Certificate in Professional Communications will have completed the first year of university transfer courses in communication leading to a diploma in Communication Studies and ultimately, if they are eligible, to a BA in Communication at Simon Fraser University  

The Advanced Professional Communications Certificate program can be completed in eight months on a full time basis.  There is also a flexible part time option for students as classes are offered during the daytime and the evening throughout the academic year. Students learn how to write a wide range of professional business documents, to write and market freelance articles, to plan media strategies for business or non-profit organizations, and to develop and deliver presentations. The program also gives students the chance to study the foundations of communications theory.
