Green Thumb Theatre for Young People
General Manager: Peter Zednick
Thank you for inviting me to comment on Green Thumb's participation in the Capilano College Arts Administration program. There are literally no other opportunities for post-secondary training in arts administration in the Vancouver area, yet arts groups are starved for professionals with hands-on experience. The student who apprenticed with Green Thumb Theatre last year was a joy to train. She was eager to learn all she could, and responded to directions quickly and enthusiastically. She was an enormous help to Green Thumb, and I feel left the placement with a much better understanding of an arts administration workplace.
Festival Distribution
Director of Marketing: Heather Kitching
The Cap College Arts Management program has developed a wonderful relationship with small and medium-sized business in the B.C. Arts industry, which exploits what each of us has to offer and provides each of us with valuable services. By taking on a qualified, professional practicum student from Cap College, we at Festival were able to expand the range of services we provide to our artists, thereby giving us a competitive advantage and increasing our sales. In return, we were only too happy to train our student to take on the role of National Publicity Coordinator, thereby giving her the experience of executing cross-Canada publicity campaigns and the chance to develop relationships with media across the nation.
Rumble Productions
[Former] Artistic Producer: Norman Armour
Last winter, Rumble Productions took in one of Capilano College's Arts and Entertainment Management Advanced Certificate Program's practicum students. To say that I was pleased with the outcome is to understate the degree to which the placement met and exceeded our organization's expectations. The student demonstrated a remarkable skill set, sense of professionalism, work ethic and eagerness for new challenges. I credit Fiona Black, the program and its instructors.
The ongoing need for a new generation of qualified arts administrators, here in Vancouver, has never been greater. In this respect, Capilano College is serving a much-needed role for both aspiring cultural workers and the cultural sector for which they are seeking future employment. In the cultural sector, strong administration translates into strong organizations characterized by stability and growth. This growth in turn spawns more demand for qualified administrators. As a not-for-profit theatre company, I can attest to the vitality and dynamism of Vancouver's theatre community, and Capilano College has been an integral part.
Endorsements by Arts and Entertainment Management Advanced Certificate Program Graduates
Presentation House Theatre Box Office Manager, Eryn Rozen
Coming from Toronto, the Arts and Entertainment Management program at Cap provided me with many new contacts in the industry and lots of opportunities. The Arts and Entertainment Management program at Cap opened up so many doors for me that I couldn't have opened myself. I wouldn't be where I am now if it wasn't for the program.
Maximum Jazz National Promotions Manager, Amalia Townsend
"Truly beneficial!" That's what I'd say about Capilano College's Arts and Entertainment Management Program. The 9 month intensive program taught me more than what I had learnt in 2 years of school. As a transfer student going on to UBC and a musician, I realized that getting a bachelors in English wasn't a guarantee of getting a job in the Music industry. It wouldn't provide me with the specific skills and would most likely have to go to school again. So I dodged the whole process and enrolled in Capilano College's one of a kind program. Through my internship at Capilano Colleges' Performing Arts Theatre and where I am currently at Maximum Jazz, I got hands on experience in arts administration. I was not only trained as a publicist, presenter, booker but an A&R representative too. Now I am responsible for promoting music across the country, in all provinces, at all radio stations and across the globe in the International Jazz magazines! I love it and couldn't have honed the skills if it wasn't for the such an innovative program.
Raincoast Books Publicist, Janice Beley
I had been actively involved in the arts for quite a few years and was looking to expand my experience and education. What attracted me to Capilano College's Arts and Entertainment Management program was the specific practicum experience that was available for each student. The classroom work was intense and challenging but the benefits of working directly with local arts groups and organizations was invaluable. The recognition from the arts community was amazing and I was pleased with how many opportunities were made available during my time in the program and after graduation. My experience with the Capilano College was incredibly positive and it fulfilled all of my expectations and more.
Previously, the program was offered under the title, Performing Arts Management Advanced Certificate program [PAM].
Arts Club Theatre Corporate Sales, Stephanie Etherington
In 10 months, PAM provided me with solid business knowledge of the arts … and ultimately a long desired career in the Performing Arts. Thank you Capilano College.
Alberta Theatre Projects Special Event Coordinator, Bernadette McKelvey
I gained valuable work experience with professional organizations such as Vancouver Playhouse and Ballet British Columbia. As a result I was able to secure a position with Alberta Theatre Projects as their Special Event Coordinator. It is my belief that without these practicum experiences I would not be working with Alberta Theatre Projects today!
Full Circle Dance Company, L.R. Gervais
The PAM program has helped further my career as a dance professional. I say this because the PAM program has given me the right tools to venture out in the knowledge of what it takes to start up a performing arts company. In my artist life I have always sought out the finest institutions of study in order to help further my career in many fields and would have to say this is definitely one of them. I would recommend this course to any artist who would likely one day start up their own company.
