Archaeology Field School

Archaeology Field School
An archaeology field school is a six  credit course, usually offered in the seven week May/June semester. Although the location may change from year to year, it is likely to remain in southern British Columbia, and is usually in a location where students can get to and from the field location on their own. Permission of the instructor is necessary to enrol in the field school, and students must apply through a formal process.

A former field school student, Angelina Smith, sums-up her experience.

I was fortunate to be one of the students selected for the Capilano Archaeology Field School, excavating historical sites in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve. I felt this hands-on learning experience gave me immeasurable knowledge and the skills to assist on professional archaeology sites in addition to being a lot of fun. I have now transferred to U.B.C. and I appreciate the solid foundation that the instructors at Capilano provided to help me acquire my future degree in Anthropology.

Field school excavation in the Seymour Valley

The 2012 archaeology field school runs from May 7th - June 22nd in the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve, only a few km from Capilano University. Students will be able to drive or bus to the reserve and then walk or bike to and from the excavation site Mondays thru Thursdays. Friday mornings will be spent on campus. The majority of time in the field will be spent excavating one or more sites from the early 1900s. Time will also be spent looking for and recording other sites in the reserve.

Besides being accepted to the university, there is a separate application process for the field school. A total of 15 students will be accepted to participate. Applications are available in the Social Sciences reception area (4th floor, Fir Building) and from all the Anthropology instructors. The application package includes a cover letter, resume, and names of two Capilano instructors who can act as references.

The application deadline is February 28th, 2012.
