The Guided Imagery and Music Session
The Bonny Method in its original form is one-to-one therapy. A typical session begins with a discussion regarding the client's state and wishes for the session. This is followed by a relaxation process which is intended to prepare the client for listening to music with deep concentration. Then, based on the client's needs, the therapist selects music which is usually in the classical style and lasts from 30 to 40 minutes. During this period of time the client reports their experiences and imagery, and the therapist interacts with them, offering support and sometimes encouragement and focus. The music facilitates a connection between the conscious and the unconscious. Finally the therapist assists the client to return to their normal awareness possibly by chatting about the experience with the client, by asking the client to draw a representation of their images, or by making music together.
It is necessary to have completed all three levels of GIM training to do the Bonny Method of individual therapy. Many adaptations of this dyadic form are possible both in group and individual sessions.
