Black Hen Music at the Electric Owl is a new partnership for the NSCU Centre, a unique concert series that brings together Steve Dawson's Black Hen House band with a special guest artist each month. All shows are 19+.

About the series:
Each concert will begin with a short set from the house band, followed by a long set with the band backing up the featured artist. The Black Hen House Band includes: Steve Dawson (guitars, pedal steel, and banjo), Keith Lowe (bass), Geoff Hicks (drums and percussion), and in rotation, either Daniel Lapp (fiddle, trumpet), or Chris Gestrin (keyboards).

On the forefront of Canada’s roots scene, Fearing mixes powerful lyrics, creative arrangements and brilliant guitar playing. Vancouver born, Fearing grew up in Dublin, Ireland immersed in the Irish and English folk traditions. With a music career spanning 20 years, Fearing recently returned to Canada’s East Coast. Now based in Halifax, he has released seven solo albums and a best of compilation featuring a rich diversity of songs. As well, Fearing is a founding member of Blackie & the Rodeo Kings, playing roots infused rock music along with Tom Wilson and Colin Linden. He has won three Juno awards and a Canadian Folk Music Award and has collaborated with a multitude of prominent artists including Richard Thompson, Margo Timmins, Sarah McLachlan, and most recently producing Suzie Vinnick's latest album. Expect an eclectic repertoire and lots of camaraderie when Fearing and Dawson team up for the ongoing Black Hen Music series.

Saskatchewan native Colin James is a multi-platinum selling artist with an international following and 12 solo albums in the blues, rock and neo-swing vein. Known primarily as an acclaimed singer-songwriter and gifted guitarist, he has also led big-bands and hosted his own show Behind the Beat on CBC Radio 2. He has been nominated for 14 Juno Awards, winning six including Male Vocalist of the Year in 1991 and 1996. Take it From the Top, The Best of Colin James releases this March, charting James career highs since his debut 23 years ago.

Grammy Award-winning Alvin Youngblood Hart is a world class country-blues artist from Oakland, California, now Memphis based. His music has been compared to Leadbelly and Spade Cooley. He is a technical genius in the genre, playing acoustic and electric guitar, banjo and mandolin. His debut album Big Mama’s Door was released in 1996, and was followed up with the Grammy nominated Down in the Alley. He won a Grammy for a collaborative project Beautiful Dreamer - The Songs of Stephen Foster. His blues music is infused with western swing, pop, reggae and rock.
