What are cookies?

Cookies are small pieces of information that are stored by your browser when you visit a website. There are two types of cookies:

  • Persistent cookies, which are stored on your hard drive.
  • Session cookies, which are stored in memory while your browser is running. When you quit your browser, all your session cookies are erased. The Capilano University website uses session cookies.

What happens when I log in?

  1. When you access a page that requires you to log in, we redirect you to our login page.
  2. You enter your student number and Personal Identification Number (PIN) and click "Login".
  3. Our server generates a temporary random number and stores it in a "cookie." This number does not contain any information about you; it is just a random number. Your student number and PIN are kept safely on our server, registered against the random number in that "cookie." This "cookie" is sent to your Web browser with two conditions:
    1. We request that your web browser send this "cookie" only to our site. It will not send it to any other Web site.
    2. We request that your web browser delete this "cookie" when you exit the browser. It will not store it on your hard drive.
  4. If your browser sends the "cookie" back to us, then the log in process has succeeded, and we can send you to the page you originally requested. If your browser does not send the "cookie" back to us, then it appears as if you have not yet logged in, and we have to send you to an error page.
