Jean Bennett Jean was born and raised in British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. She joined Capilano University in 1994 and worked as an instructor in Adult Basic Education and the Community Development and Outreach and Foundations for Independent Living departments. In 1995, Jean became the program developer for Sunshine Coast initiatives, as well as a program consultant for Continuing Education. She was named Dean of the Sunshine Coast campus in 2004. Jean says she works at Capilano University because: “Post-secondary is a great place to be. It offers creative work, interesting colleagues and an opportunity to make a difference.” Prior to coming to Capilano, Jean worked as an independent consultant on innovative projects that focussed on the experiences of people living with developmental disabilities. Her collaboration with others in the disability movement led to the creation of a multi-media installation called From the Inside/OUT. She has also co-edited a book of writings by and about people with disabilities called So Far: Words from Learners. Jean has worked with a wide variety of community based non-profits and task forces on both the Sunshine Coast and in the lower mainland. She currently serves as a Board member for the Sunshine Coast Festival of the Written Arts, one of Canada's premier small literary festivals. Jean holds a Masters of Arts (Royal Roads University) and a Bachelor of Arts (Simon Fraser University).She currently lives in Roberts Creek with her partner, Norma, where she enjoys paddling, hiking, tai chi and gardening. |
