The CapU Blues women's volleyball team (13-9) travelled to Abbotsford this past weekend to take on the CBC Bearcats (4-18). The Blues came away with back-to-back victories to remain in a second-place tie with the Camosun Chargers.

On Friday night, Kira Sutcliffe led the way with nine kills, 13 digs, three blocks and one ace along with Meghan Koven, who contributed eight kills, 14 digs, one block and three aces in the 3-1 win over the Bearcats. Saturday night saw much of the same from the Blues who continued their dominance behind Sutcliffes' 17 kills, five aces and one block, as well as 15 kills from Alexis Sebok in a 3-1 victory over the Bearcats.

Head coach Cal Wohlford was thrilled to pick up the weekend sweep.

"We were very good on Friday, we came out pretty steady. In the fourth set, we got in a good groove and they couldn't stop us," he said. "Saturday, we kept our errors down and earned some good points. Alexis [Sebok] had two great nights along with Sarah [Hughes] who did a good job moving the ball around."

With the PACWEST provincials championships just two weeks away (February 25-27), Wohlford mentioned the importance of his team playing consistent and he believes that this past weekend was a great indication of just how good they can be when they play with confidence.

On the men's side, the Blues were able to secure their provincial championship berth as they picked up a much needed 3-1 win Saturday night against the Bearcats behind the strong play of outside hitter, Brendan Cairns. Over the two-game weekend, Cairns totalled 53 kills, two aces and five blocks.

The Blues finish off PACWEST league play this week as they travel to New Westminster to face the Douglas College Royals on Thursday night and are back at home for their final home game of the 2015-2016 season, Friday, February 19th at 6/8 p.m. against the Royals. Depending on the outcome of the weekend, the Blues women's volleyball team can head into provincials being ranked anywhere between a two to a four seed.
